leyland tractor

This tractor was seen on a trade stand at a truck festival in Peterborough, 2002. It is the latest model from Iveco and is a 4 x 2 sleeper cab with a 480 bhp engine. I love this old Leyland Super Comet advert, which appeared in an April 1966 edition of Motor Transport. It’s highly unusual for a manufacturer to show an image of the truck it is replacing in an advert for a new model - but in the case of the Super Comet it works well. What a great way of demonstrating the vast improvement in visibility given by the new tilting Ergomatic cab. Yep the Ergomatic Cab was used by AEC, Albion and Leyland between 1964 and 1979. The cab was known as the "tilt-cab" by AEC (rather than "Ergomatic")and it was in fact "fixed" on some lightweight Albions. Rather obscurely the cab also found its' way onto Vanaja trucks in Finland and onto a couple of Atkinson built fire appliances in Australia. Chris Gardner writes: And used also, curiously, on a brace of Australian Atkinson fire appliances built for the City of Melbourne in 1968!!

DAF took control of Leyland in 1987. This tractor was made in 1978. It has since been restored and was seen at a truck festival near Swindon in 2002. Following on from my Destination Doha blog, Richard Stanier has sent me this fantastic image - straight out of a 1970s British Leyland sales brochure. You are of course looking at an Astran Middle East-spec Leyland Marathon tractor, and doesn't it look fantastic? And on the subject of Leyland Marathons, check out this example that Commercial Motor's Colin Barnett photographed on a recent trip to Cyprus. Albion and AEC both being owned by Leyland ,so one modern cab design was created. Still doesn't look out of place today ,not bad for a 40 year old design. Unbelievably though the Ergomatic cab was never designed for left hand drive options! The older cab is the LAD (Leyland, Albion, Dodge) and wasn't phased out when the Ergomatic cab turned up but was used up to the early seventies.
